Rozpalanie wielkiego pieca ogrzewającego kilkupiętrowy budynek z kilkudziesięcioma pomieszczeniami. Jeszcze dwa tygodnie wcześniej tego nie umiałem, a teraz powoli wyrabiam sobie przyzwyczajenia i nabieram doświadczenia.

Przed rozpoczęciem nagrywania przygotowane już były: taczka węgla, drewno, drobniejsze drewienka i papier na rozpałkę. A także narzędzia, krzesło i książka.

Procedura jest dość niezmienna, choć zdarzają się dodatkowe kroki jak ten na samym początku nagrania.

Nagranie zaczyna się od wskakującego do kotłowni przez otwór wentylacyjny kota. Jest to miejsce przygotowane dla nich do zimowania i mają tę drogę otwartą. Moją pracę rozpoczynam więc od przywitania się z kotem i dosypania do miski karmy. Wiążę naprędce wsunięte buty, a w międzyczasie kot bierze się do jedzenia. Ustawiam pustą taczkę na popiół i przez główne drzwiczki strącam i zdrapuję popiół z elementów wewnętrznych pieca. Odkręcam śruby i odstawiam na bok kolejne drzwiczki, poniżej, żeby wybrać popiół. Do wybierania popiołu używam specjalnie przygotowanej, spłaszczonej łopaty. Ta operacja nie może być zbyt gwałtowna, żeby nie wzbijać popiołu w powietrze. Resztę strącam z rusztów do komory poniżej. Otwieram drzwiczki najniższej części pieca i stąd wybieram resztę popiołu. Kilkukrotnie używam miotły do oczyszczania elementów drzwiczek i sprzątania podłogi. Podzwaniają wymieniane od czasu do czasu, odstawiane i odwieszane na ścianę narzędzia. Po wybraniu popiołu wywożę go na zewnątrz. Ustawiam mikrofon bliżej otwartych drzwiczek pieca, żeby posłuchać szalejącego ognia. Piec osiąga odpowiednią temperaturę. Włączam pompę. Zanim powracająca z odległych kaloryferów woda schłodzi tę w piecu, dmuchawa zwalnia, bo piec osiągnął odpowiednią temperaturę i nie potrzeba już rozdmuchiwać tak ognia. Nagranie kończy się prawie zupełnie zatrzymującą się dmuchawą.

Lighting a large furnace for heating a multi-story building with several dozen rooms. Two weeks ago I couldn't do it, and now I'm slowly getting used to it and gaining experience.

Before the recording was started, there were some elements already prepared: a wheelbarrow of coal, wood, smaller pieces of wood and some paper as kindling. And also tools, a chair and a book.

The procedure is pretty much the same each time, although there are additional steps like the one at the very beginning of the recording.

The recording starts with a cat jumping into the boiler room through the vent. It is a place prepared for them for winter and they have this entry open. So I start my work by saying hello to the cat and adding food to the bowl. I tie my quickly slipped-on shoes while the cat starts eating. I set the empty ash-wheelbarrow and through the main furnace door I brush and scrape the ashes off the inside of the furnace. I unscrew the screws and set aside another door below to pick out the ash. I use a specially prepared, flattened shovel to pick up the ash. This operation must not be rushed, so as not to raise the ash into the air. I knock the rest off the grates into the chamber below. I open the fdoor to the lowest part of the furnace and take out the rest of the ash from there. I use the broom several times to clean the door parts and to clean the floor. The tools are clanging while I switch between them from time to time, put them aside or hung up on the wall. After picking all the ash, I take it outside. Then I can replace the door and tighten the screws until the next cleaning. I drive a wheelbarrow with fuel and shovel coal into the main chamber of the furnace. I put wood on the coal, then kindling and paper. After letting the fire burn properly, I can turn on the blower and relax with a book on my chair. Unless the fire dies down and I decide to throw in torn cardboard boxes to help it build up again. Despite the warning "Do not open the door while the blower is running", I open the door several times and look inside. The blower works at high speed until the set temperature is reached. I am waiting for this moment to turn on the pump that forces the circulation of water to the radiators and the boiler. In the meantime, I go outside with the wheelbarrow for the coal and for the next burning, and bring me some wood. I place the microphone closer to the open furnace door to listen to the raging fire. The furnace reaches the correct temperature. I turn on the pump. Before the water returning from distant radiators cools the water in the furnace, the blower slows down because the furnace has reached the right temperature and there is no need to blow the fire. The recording ends with the blower almost completely stopping.
